Large-firm foundations.
Personal CPA dedication.

Alan Balmer is a credentialed Certified Public Accountant who has spent over four decades helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate complex federal and state tax codes. By keeping his practice independent and personal, Alan ensures every client deals directly with him — no junior associates, no administrative disconnect, and no generic answers.

Alan began his career in the Washington, D.C. office of Laventhol & Horwath, then the seventh-largest accounting firm in the United States. This environment instilled in him a rigorous, systemized large-firm methodology. In 1984, he transitioned that experience to establish his own multi-accountant firm, Balmer, Nelson & Van Mersbergen, in Fairfield, Iowa, which he led successfully for thirty-one years.

Fairfield served as a unique, national incubator for early-stage industries and small businesses. Alan acted as the primary tax advisor to thousands of starting companies, navigating them from entity creation to high-growth phases — including pioneering businesses that went public or sold for nine figures.

For over twenty years, Alan also served as controller for a prominent global nonprofit corporation, integrating his firm's full capabilities — bookkeeping, tax preparation, strategic tax planning, technical research, and tax-exempt filings — into the organization's nationwide operations, providing vertical support a single internal hire could not duplicate.

Now operating out of Argyle, Texas, Alan runs a focused solo advisory, helping select business owners and individuals establish tax savings structures, address IRS challenges, and coordinate filings across the country.

Questions,
answered directly.

The answers to what most new clients ask before we begin.

How do you bill for services?
+
Corporate and individual returns are typically billed at a flat rate after completion. Bookkeeping and payroll are fixed monthly. Proposals are provided in advance for audits and special projects — there are no surprises.
What hours are you available?
+
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during tax season (January 15 – April 15). Evening and weekend appointments are available by arrangement.
What happens if I receive an IRS notice?
+
Only a CPA, attorney, or enrolled agent may represent you before the Service. I provide full representation and communicate directly with the agencies on your behalf — you are never alone in the room.
Do you work with clients outside of Texas?
+
Yes. Initial roots in Iowa and early clients who migrated across the country gave Alan deep, working familiarity with state-specific structures, advantages, and filing requirements across all fifty states.
Will I work with you directly?
+
Always. There are no junior associates, no handoffs, no administrative layers. Every engagement begins and ends with the CPA who will do the work.
